Nicholas Martinez '20 Selected to Wear the #78 Honored Jersey
Posted 10/01/2018 01:47PM

Wearing a Servite football uniform comes with a great deal of pride. The jersey represents deep tradition and a team-first mentality shared by the players before them. One jersey in particular carries a special tribute to a past player's legacy. The #78 Honored Jersey is worn in memory of Kevin Stephenson '73, a true leader respected by all those he played with because of his dedication to Servite and his brothers.

In tribute to Stephenson's quiet leadership, unyielding strength and loyal friendship, the Class of 1973 established the 'Kevin Stephenson Football Endowment Fund' in 2003. His #78 is now given to the player that best exemplifies Stephenson's leadership and character.

The tradition of handing out this jersey is kept alive by the President of the Servite Alumni Association, Kelly Boulger '73 and the Voice of the Friars, Tim Brundige Sr. '73.

For the 2018 season, Nicholas Martinez was selected by the coaching staff to wear the honored jersey because of the heart he shows when playing football.

Although he is only a junior, Martinez embodies everything this jersey stands for and is more than deserving of this recognition. He will carry the number throughout his junior and senior campaigns as he continues to follow the example of Stephenson and develop as a leader on the offensive line and with the team as a whole.

The Martinez family was recognized before the Mater Dei game to publicly honor his selection.

Stephenson was a Captain for the Friar Class of 1973, earning All-CIF, All-County, All-League honors, and was named 1973 Athlete of the Year. He was a member of the first Curia. His senior season was highlighted by a 12-0 victory over rival Mater Dei, the first in eight years, and a return to the CIF playoffs. Kevin and his teammates are credited with returning a tradition of excellence to Servite Football and reclaiming the school's prominence in Southern California high school sports. Stephenson passed away in 2004 after a long battle with cancer.
