Each year, the Orange County Register is proud to recognize Orange County's talented art students in partnership with Orange County Music and Dance and the Orange County Department of Education by naming the nominees for the annual Artist of the Year awards. Visual and performing arts teachers from each high school have nominated students in the fields and this year three Servite students were nominated for their achievements in the arts.
Matthew Masamori was nominated for the discipline of Film by Mr. Jeff Baldo. "I nominated Matthew because of the high production value his work possesses. He has a vast understanding of electronic cinematography and continues to grow and learn more as the year progresses. His work is well composed and visually striking," said Mr. Baldo.
Michael Cabrera and Jarred Murrietta were nominated for the discipline of Visual Arts, 2D, by Ms. Kristin Berardino. "Michael loves to explore different media with drawing and painting, and takes chances on creative ideas. Michael also helps others in class and leaves himself open to others when needed," Ms. Berardino said. "Jared is open to tackle new ideas and media such as chalk, pastel, and pen. His passion for art goes beyond the classroom and he is constantly doodling, drawing portraits for gifts, and other thumbnails."
Following this initial nomination, a panel of arts educators will choose semi-finalists in each discipline to move on to the next round. The semi-finalists will be announced on Sundays beginning April 1 and the top Artist of the Year for each discipline will be announced on April 22.
