Volunteers Needed for Peer Court

Hosted by Servite High School

Tuesday, January 15

3:30 PM – 5:30 PM Servite Theatre

All Servite, Rosary and Connelly students, are invited to participate in the upcoming Peer Court Session. This is a great opportunity for students to learn about the judicial process and have the ability to interact with a sitting judge, attorney’s, probation officers and juvenile offenders. Every student that participates will receive three service hours. Parents are also welcome to observe the sessions.

Peer Court is a unique, juvenile crime diversion program that offers both a second chance to first-time juvenile offenders who have committed non-violent misdemeanors and a valuable educational experience to all high school students in Orange County. At each session, a sitting judge presides, attorneys advise, and high school students designated as “jurors” assess the cases presented and assign appropriate sanctions.

Operating under the authority of the County of Orange Probation Department, Orange County judges preside over the sessions and select juries from the audience. The student jurors have the opportunity to question the juvenile offender and his or her parent(s) about the offense, after which they deliberate with the assistance of an attorney advisor and decide upon appropriate sanctions to recommend to the judge. The judge issues the final decision. Students in the audience observe and participate in an interactive curriculum, learning about the juvenile justice system and the importance of making responsible decisions.

All interested students/parents must complete an electronic registration form online. If you have further questions, please contact Connor Buchanan, Student Liaison at connor.buchanan@servitehs.org.
