Sports schedule 2020-2021 / COVID-19 PROTOCOL and updates

COVID ATHLETIC ATTENDANCE POLICY

The Orange County Department of Public Health, the California Department of Public Health, and the National Federation of High School Sports have protocols that we must follow for all games played this season to ensure the safety of our student-athletes, coaches, officials, support staff and fans.

Currently, our home games and matches are not open to the general public. Only two (2) members of the athletes household are permitted to observe games.  This will only hold true only if the number of those that are attending, including athletes and support staff (trainers, coaches, officials and supervision) does not exceed 25% of the capacity of the venue.

Coaches will communicate to their respective families attendance policies for their specific sporting events. Guidelines may vary depending on location.

UPDATE  February 19, 2021 - California Youth Sports Update

Here we go! Exciting news came out today and we couldn’t be more thrilled for our student-athletes or hopeful for what is to come for high school sports in California! Governor Newson announced revised guidelines for youth sports, specifically for return-to-competition, that will take effect February 26, 2021.

Before going into further detail, I have to say thank you! Thank you to all of our student-athletes, families, coaches, support staff and administration for your patience and support over the past year. Your dedication, resilience and willingness to adapt and grow has been invaluable. We could not be more proud of the way you have carried yourself!

Moving forward, with this exciting announcement comes a lot of details to review and plans to reevaluate. Work has been ongoing behind the scenes to prepare for this announcement with many sports already having their schedules prepared.

Our athletic department is currently reviewing the new guidelines as well as the most recent CIF-SS update to provide revised information to our coaches, families and student-athletes by sport next week including an overview of the new guidelines, safety protocols and schedules.

While there are still metrics that have to be met, we are in great shape! When Orange County reaches the required threshold, outdoor sports will be cleared to begin on predetermined start dates under specific guidelines that will be detailed in next week's correspondence. Discussion regarding indoor sports is ongoing with the possibility of moving competition outdoors.

As we move into this next phase, now more than ever it is important that you continue to follow mask and physical distancing guidelines to ensure that you are healthy and able to play. Don’t eliminate yourself from the competition. Enjoy your weekend and get ready to go!

UPDATE JANUARY 19, 2021- A Message from Athletic Director Alan Clinton following the CIF-SS announcement regarding fall playoffs.

The CIF Southern Section Offices announced today the cancellation of the 2020-2021 Fall Sports Championships due to the COVID pandemic. They detailed their decision in a press release posted this morning then followed up with an afternoon press conference stating in part that because fall sports have not been able to begin competition at this point there will not be sufficient time for those sports to conduct viable league play before conducting Section Championships.

With that decision being announced, schools can now utilize the time remaining in the fall sports calendar to potentially schedule games up to the last allowable contest dates as detailed below:

Cross Country - Saturday, March 27, 2021
Football - Saturday, April 17, 2021
Water Polo - Saturday, March 20, 2021

The CIF-SS reiterated that while Fall Sports Championships have been cancelled they are not cancelling the entire season for fall sports saying, “We strongly support our member schools in returning to play, provided the guidelines distributed by the California Department of Public Health, and local health authorities are adhered to. We will continue to do all we can to advocate our position to those entities as well.”

The next steps for our teams and student-athletes vary due to our fall sports falling into different state tiers.

Cross Country - Purple Tier
Since cross country is allowed to compete in the purple tier beginning after January 25, once California’s stay-at-home order is lifted, competition will be able to begin in accordance with county guidelines.

Football and Water Polo - Orange Tier
At this time, football and water polo are unable to compete until the county moves to the orange tier. However, in the meantime Trinity League schools are meeting to update the league schedules following today’s announcement so that dates are in place and preparation can begin as guidelines allow. Additional information will be released as it becomes available from the league.

No changes have been made to the spring sports (season two) calendar since its initial release in July of 2020.

For all of our sports, we will continue training in accordance with the COVID guidelines we detailed last week.

UPDATE JANUARY 15, 2021- New Volleyball Schedule

After being moved from spring to fall then back to spring (season two), new dates for volleyball have been released for the 2021 volleyball season.

First contest- March 13
SOP date- April 13
Last league contest- May 13
CIF-SS Preliminaries- May 18 (W/C), 20, 22, 26, 29
CIF-SS Finals- June 5

UPDATE DECEMBER 3, 2020- A Message from Athletic Director Alan Clinton

In response to this week’s CIF State and subsequent CIF-SS announcements regarding the ongoing situation concerning the COVID-19 pandemic and the effect on education-based athletics, we want to keep you informed and up-to-date on the latest developments.

As stated in their announcements, the start of fall sports competition and return to full practice has been delayed until the new year awaiting updated youth sports guidelines. As a result, the CIF State Office has canceled Regional and State Championship events for cross country, football and water polo to allow for more schools and student-athletes to compete in a longer regular season and section playoffs. Additionally, the Regional Championship events for volleyball have been moved to spring with the option for individual sections to leave competition in fall or move it back to spring as well. Currently, the CIF-SS is keeping the schedule as is with volleyball remaining a fall sport but will evaluate the decision further with an update expected in January.

With that being said, Servite’s plan remains the same. We are committed to supporting and preparing our student-athletes to play the sports they love in the safest manner possible. We will continue to move forward and provide our student-athletes and coaches with the best opportunities to succeed.

This year continues to bring new challenges but we remain confident that together we will continue to rise to the occasion, adapt and overcome any obstacles in our way. The beauty of being in a strong community rooted in faith and brotherhood is that together we can accomplish more than any of us could individually. It will take flexibility, patience, initiative and heart but we will get through this difficult situation and come out the other side stronger than ever.

In the meantime, practices will continue following all COVID-19 guidelines already in place. Please refer to communication from your respective coaches regarding scheduling.

As always, we will keep you posted as new information is released. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

WE ARE SERVITE!

UPDATE JULY 21, 2020- A Message from Athletic Director Alan Clinton

In response to the ongoing situation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, the CIF State and Southern Section offices announced on Monday, July 20, 2020 an update to the sports calendar for the 2020-2021 school year.

As you know, traditionally our 13 CIF sports are played in three seasons- fall, winter and spring. However, with the recent changes, all sports will now be classified into two seasons- fall and spring. Volleyball will join Cross Country, Football and Water Polo as fall sports and will begin in December and January while our remaining nine sports including Basketball, Soccer, Wrestling, Baseball, Golf, Lacrosse, Swimming, Tennis and Track and Field will play in the spring beginning in February and March.

With this announcement, we now have the framework in place to move forward in planning the athletic calendar. It is our utmost priority to work with the Servite administration and coaches to provide the safest environment for our student-athletes. This year will bring a new set of challenges but I am confident that with the support of all our coaches, families, staff and community we will be able to continue to offer the same level of excellence across our athletic programs that you have been accustomed to over the years.

It is our goal that the athletic program continues to play a vital part in each student-athletes Servite experience and assists in the formation of our young men becoming the best version of themselves. We are committed to preparing our student-athletes for the challenges that lie ahead and the rigors of Trinity League and CIF competition. I believe that we can truly accomplish any goals we set out for ourselves if we work hard, remain focused and have hope.

The history, tradition and culture of Servite has us poised to come out of this difficult situation on top and stronger than ever! We look forward to the championships that will be won, the records broken and the memories that will be made in the upcoming year.

All of this will be accomplished because WE ARE SERVITE!
