At the end of each school year, Servite Athletics presents four special awards to student-athletes who excel in the classroom (Scholar-Athlete of the Year), on the field of play (Athlete of the Year), in the community (Frank Ryan Service Award) and personally (Sherer Courage Award). These awards are given out at our annual Hall of Fame Dinner and All Sports Banquet held at the Orange Hill Restaurant.
The Frank Ryan Memorial Service award is presented to a varsity letterman who has gone above and beyond in providing service to his communities while balancing his academic and athletic obligations. This award is named in honor of Frank Ryan who sent nine sons to Servite between 1972 and 1993 and worked diligently to support the Friar community in whatever way possible. He understood the need to serve and searched out opportunities to help, never having to be asked to do anything.
This year’s recipient is Hudson Hamar. Hamar completed over 1000 hours of community service during his time at Servite while competing in volleyball as a two-year letterman and carrying a 4.6 GPA. To put that in perspective, Servite students are required to complete 100 hours over their four years, that’s more than 10x the requirement.
On campus, he founded the organization Her Servants’ Closet (HSC). HSC is a service ministry aimed at providing Servite students in need with a way to obtain uniforms at either a lower cost or no cost. Servite families donate unneeded and outgrown uniforms, giving these uniforms a second life with another Servite student. After launching the organization his freshman year, over 4,250 items have been collected with 2,750 items being redistributed benefitting more than 400 Servite families. Under the same umbrella, Hamar designed, created and marketed a sweatshirt campaign that was sold as “Buy One, Give One”, adding new outerwear along with uniforms to the closet. He also spearheaded two community-wide drives, one for toys benefitting Pathways of Hope and the other for winter clothing in conjunction with The Pajama Program.
Furthermore, he has been a staple in the Admissions Ambassador program volunteering with special events such as Open House, Athletic Open House, In-home nights, shadow days and more. In addition, he has twice served as a leader on Kairos, supporting his peers in their individual faith journeys while mentoring new students during Freshman Formation Weekend.
An Eagle Scout, Hamar further dedicated himself to Servite by doing his project on campus when he organized and built a reflection patio.
Off campus, he has been an active volunteer with RAD Camp, an organization that provides summer camp opportunities to people with special needs. He has also worked with HoopStars and St. Juliana’s serving as a coach for youth basketball and volleyball programs.
Academically, he earned Principal’s High Honor Roll with Distinction for six semesters while taking multiple HP and AP classes. Athletically, he earned All-Trinity League honors after helping lead the volleyball team to the CIF-SS Finals his junior year and quarterfinals senior year.
At Servite, he also serves on the Generalate as the Secretary General and is involved with the National Honor Society, California Scholarship Federation and JSA serving as the vice president his junior year and president as a senior. He is headed to Boston College in the fall.
