Jonathan Schulte Memorial Award
“The Jonathan Schulte award is so much more than an award praising a young athletes ability on the court or his pure love of the sport. This award represents a man who truly embodies the four D’s of Servite: desire, dedication, discipline, and determination, a man who treats others the way he wants to be treated. This award is given to someone who lives the way John did and changes lives the way John did. The number seventeen is not just a number, it is a representation. Before each game of my volleyball career, I would remind myself what I was playing for. I would write the number seventeen on the soul of my shoe to remind myself of all the times I wanted to quit but didn’t. All of the times I told myself I wasn’t good enough but rose above that voice in my head. All the times I didn’t want to go to the weight room but somehow got myself there. I put it there to remind me that wether I was on the court or not, I was the team. I pushed my teammates to be better and work harder. That simple two digit number reminds me of these things because it reflects John and how he made me stronger; in his life and in his death. People were better when he was around. He showed us that it was okay to be weak at times but it was also okay to demand more of others.
This award is given to commemorate Jonathan Schulte’s life, not his death. It is to encourage us to live our lives the way he would be living his if he was still with us.So when you put on the number 17 or see it on the back of your teammate, remember what John demands of you. Be the men of Servite, be better and expect better of each other.”
