Coaches

Jon Spencer Varsity Head Coach

Since taking over the Servite Soccer program in 2012, Coach Jon Spencer has led the Friars to five consecutive Trinity League titles, the school’s first ever CIF-SS Division 1 Championship and two regional bids. Overall Servite has gone 109-23-26 and 45-6-9 in league play with Coach Spencer earning his 100th career win in the 2017-18 season. The Friars have had ten league MVPs or Co-MVPs in that time including 45 All-league selections while 29 graduates over the past six years have gone on to play at the collegiate ranks.

Following the 2015 season Coach Spencer was named Orange County Register Coach of the Year and CIF-SS Coach of the Year.

Coach Spencer has a rich background in soccer. He grew up in Palmdale, California and attended UC Irvine where he studied History and Political Science and was a midfielder and the Captain on the men’s soccer team. Through college he coached at University High School in Irvine, placing a passion for coaching within him.

Coach Spencer started his professional career by spending a season with the Kansas City Wizards of the MLS, followed by a season playing with the Orange County Blue Star. Coach Spencer then moved to Europe to play for VfR Mannheim and SV Weil am Rhein. After several years as a professional player he was recruited to scout for professional clubs in Europe and to recruit top high school players across the United States. Coach Spencer is the first scout to send an American high school graduate directly to a first team in Europe. That player, Joshua Gatt, just made his U.S. Men’s National Team debut in 2012. Most recently Coach Spencer was the General Manager and Head Coach for the Orange County Blue Star. He also served as the Technical Director of Soccer for Advanced Soccer Media and TopDrawerSoccer.com. During his time as a coach and scout he has mentored the NCAA Div 1 Freshman Player of the Year twice (Soony Saad, Michigan, 2010; Mikey Lopez, UNC, 2011), multiple MLS First Round Draft Picks and US Youth National Team Players. Coach Spencer holds a USSF Class “A” soccer national coaching license.

Coach Spencer’s passion for coaching led him to Servite. He is an advocate of formation and is committed to the goals of this hallmark program of Servite High School. Coach Spencer stresses more than just winning to the young Friars. He motivates them to be better individuals as well as better athletes. Coach Spencer has recently taken on a larger role at Servite moving into the position of Admissions Director.

Coach Spencer also brings his wife Heather and sons Luke and Joshua into the Servite family. She is an accomplished soccer player in her own right, playing in college for UC Irvine. They currently live in Santa Ana and besides soccer, enjoy all sports, love traveling, and spending time with their Church family.
