Editor's note: Manny Alvarez is writing for OCVarsity about the loud, proud, innovative and dedicated high school student sections during the boys basketball season, and each week he will select The OCVarsity Student Section of the Week.

The winner will be announced on Mondays during the season.

It was an incredible fight for the first OCVarsity honor of the boys basketball season. We had at least 10 strong candidates for our list of five finalists, but we had to keep the list to five ... and we could only select one winner.

And the champion for this week is ...

Servite's The Asylum

We had some fantastic showings from the student sections in Orange County, but the choice for No. 1 wasn't even close.

The Asylum destroyed its competition.

The Asylum is an annual powerhouse during basketball season, and this year appears to be no different. The Asylum came in and knocked out their competition.

The Asylum made it a fun and entertaining evening Friday in the visitor's section of the gym Friday night despite the Friars' 74-36 loss to Mater Dei.

"Going into the game, everyone knew we were the underdogs," The Asylum said in a statement. "It was going to be a tough battle. Nonetheless, the Asylum brought life to the gym at every opportunity. All week the guys were excited and planning for the game, and tonight we proved that the brotherhood is No. 1. Of course a special thanks to the Servite community, administration, and students for making this all possible. Words cannot describe the support we receive from them."

The basketball season's student section competition begins with The Asylum – a true dynasty among Orange County student sections – at the top.
