Head Coach John Morris '01
The 2019-2020 school year marked Coach John Morris' 9th season as the head coach at Servite and his 15th year overall at the school. Coach Morris was a three-sport letterman (football, basketball, and baseball) at Servite and graduated in 2001. While at Servite, Coach Morris was named captain of the varsity basketball team as a sophomore and was All-Serra League as a junior. He received his bachelor’s degree in Human Communications from California State University, Fullerton in 2006.
Coach Morris returned to Servite in 2004 to begin his coaching career. Prior to becoming the head basketball coach at Servite, Coach Morris has served as a varsity assistant basketball coach, head freshman basketball coach, and strength/conditioning coach for basketball. Coach Morris has taught Algebra and also served as a Formation Director.
Coach Morris was named the Trinity League Coach of the Year following the 2012-2013 season after guiding the Friars to a 17-13 overall record and advancing to the CIF Quarterfinals. Since then, the Friars have made three additional playoff appearances advancing to the CIF Semifinals in 2014 and the CIF Quarterfinals in 2015. In Morris' tenure, the Friars have won a playoff game in five consecutive years for the first time in Servite history. During the span, Servite has a 9-5 playoff record, a .642 winning percentage.
Coach Morris has twice been selected to coach in the county all-star games, first as an Assistant coach for the North Team in the Orange County All-Star game in 2013 then again in 2015 when he served as the Head Coach of the North Team in the Open Gym All-Star Classic. Both times the Friars had players selected for the games as well, Eric Torres ’13 and Trevor Treinen ‘15.
Coach Morris challenges his players on and off the court, which speaks to his coaching style and leads to players thriving in his system and continuing their basketball careers past Servite. Neil Pauu '14 and Trevor Treinen '15 earned 1st team All-CIF under Morris.
In Coach Morris’ first eight seasons as head coach, Servite Basketball has started up Fall and Spring Leagues for Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Frosh-Soph teams and has expanded the annual Varsity summer tournament to include Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior Varsity fields. Servite’s Fall League has grown into one of the largest Fall Leagues in all of Southern California, involving over 50 teams combined at all three levels.
Coach Morris and the Friars also participate in the Yorba Linda Challenger Division. Servite players team up with players with special needs athletes to develop their skills and play games.
Married for 9 years now, Coach Morris would like to thank his wife Casey for her continued support and love. Coach Morris and his wife currently reside in Fullerton and look forward to another exciting year of Servite Basketball.
