At the end of each school year, Servite Athletics presents four special awards to student-athletes who excel in the classroom (Scholar-Athlete of the Year), on the field of play (Athlete of the Year), in the community (Frank Ryan Service Award) and personally (Sherer Courage Award). These awards are given out at our annual Hall of Fame Dinner and All Sports Banquet held at the Orange Hill Restaurant. 

The Athlete of the Year is someone who excels in athletics in addition to providing service to the community while maintaining the high academic expectations set at Servite. This award is always competitive with baseball player Roman Martin standing out among the rest to earn the esteemed recognition in 2023.

Martin has been dominant on the diamond throughout his high school career. After COVID shortened his freshman season, he broke onto the Trinity League stage in a big way his sophomore year earning Trinity League Rookie of the Year honors and 1st Team accolades. In doing so, he was the first player in league history to hit over .400 during the 15 game league stretch. He followed up that performance by breaking his own record junior year when he hit .511 to once again become the first player to hit over 500 in the extremely competitive Trinity League. For his efforts, he was recognized Trinity League MVP as a junior as well as 1st Team All-Orange County, MaxPreps All-State and MaxPreps Underclass All-American. He completed the three-peat his senior season by once again earning 1st Team All-Trinity League recognition, the first Friar to do so three times since the creation of the league in 2007. Entering his senior campaign, he was also recognized MaxPreps Preseason All-American while being ranked the no. 1 player in California by multiple organizations. 

Throughout his decorated career, he hit an impressive .356 overall and .424 in league play while tallying 89 hits, 7 home runs, 53 RBIs and 54 runs scored in 83 games played. He also boasted a .481 on base percentage. 

Outside of Servite, he played for Team USA winning gold with the 18U Team at the WBSC Baseball World Cup Americas Qualifier and was selected to play in the MLB High School All-American Game at Dodgers Stadium. Additionally, he was named a Perfect Game All-American while earning the opportunity to play in the Area Code Games and BBG High School All-Star Classic.   

Off the field, he carries a 4.1 GPA earning various honor roll recognitions all seven semesters. In addition, he has volunteered with a wide range of organizations including Make-A-Wish, Salvation Army, Red Cross and the St. Baldricks Foundation. He has also served as a youth baseball coach and helped out with Servite Admissions events. 

A Gatorade Player of the Year nominee, he has signed to continue his academic and athletic career at UCLA.
