After having an opportunity to be drafted as a high school senior, and choosing to forgo the draft and honor his commitment to UCLA, Roman Martin '23 has now heard his name called on the first day of the MLB Draft as the Athletics selected him 111th overall in the 4th round. 

Roman Martin '23 - Servite SS / UCLA 3B

A three-year starter at shortstop for your Friars and the 2023 Servite Athlete of the Year, Martin broke onto the scene in a big way as a sophomore, earning Trinity League Rookie of the Year honors and 1st Team accolades. In doing so, he was the first player in league history to hit over .400 during the 15-game league stretch. He followed up that performance by breaking his own record junior year, hitting .511 to once again become the first player to hit over 500 in the extremely competitive Trinity League. For his efforts, he was recognized as the Trinity League MVP as a junior as well as 1st Team All-Orange County, MaxPreps All-State, and MaxPreps Underclass All-American. He completed the three-peat in his senior season by once again earning 1st Team All-Trinity League recognition, becoming the first Friar to do so three times since the league's creation in 2007. 

Throughout his decorated career, he hit an impressive .356 overall and .424 in league play while tallying 89 hits, 7 home runs, 53 RBIs, and 54 runs scored in 83 games played. He also boasted a .481 on-base percentage. 

Outside of Servite, he played for Team USA, winning gold with the 18U Team at the WBSC Baseball World Cup Americas Qualifier, and was selected to play in the MLB High School All-American Game at Dodger Stadium. Additionally, he was named a Perfect Game All-American and earned the opportunity to play in the Area Code Games and the BBG High School All-Star Classic.

Martin went on to play for UCLA, starting over 150 games as a Bruin, during which he hit .321 with 188 hits, 21 home runs, and 45 extra-base hits, adding 136 RBIs. He earned First Team All-Big Ten honors as a junior and Second Team All-Big Ten accolades as a sophomore. In 2025, he was recognized as the Los Angeles Regional Most Outstanding Player, helping UCLA punch its ticket to the College World Series in Omaha. In 2026, he hit clean up for the Bruins, who were Big Ten Champions and ranked No. 1 in the nation during the entirety of the regular season.
