What Every Parent Needs to Know Once Their Child Turns 18
A Special Webinar for Junior and Senior parents
As your child approaches adulthood and prepares to head off to college, there is an important reality many families are unaware of: once a child turns 18, parents no longer have the legal authority to access medical information, make healthcare decisions, or manage financial matters on their behalf—even in an emergency.
In fact, due to federal privacy laws (HIPAA), you may not even be notified if your child is hospitalized. In certain situations, hospitals can appoint a surrogate decision-maker who may not be you. These are not just technical legalities—they are real-life situations that families often discover in the middle of a crisis.
To help families prepare for this important transition, Servite High School is hosting a special lunchtime webinar to provide guidance on the legal steps every young adult should take before leaving for college or entering adulthood.
Lunch & Learn Workshop Details:
Wednesday, June 17, 2026
12:00 PM – 1:00 PM
via webinar
We request that parents attend this workshop without their students present due to the sensitive nature of the topics discussed.
We are pleased to welcome Laura Meier, Esq., estate planning attorney and author of Guided by Grace, who will walk families through the key legal documents and considerations every parent should understand once a child turns 18. Families will receive complimentary resources to help them take immediate action and feel more confident navigating this next season of life.
