Servite Soccer Nominated for Three USA TODAY High School Sports Awards; Sanchez Named Player of the Year

The 2020 USA Today LA Sports Awards have been announced. After eight nominees were originally selected in each category, three finalists were named before the winner was announced during a live broadcast in early June. 

After winning their 7th consecutive Trinity League Championship and the 2020 CIF-SS Division 1 title, Servite was nominated in three categories- Player of the Year, Coach of the Year and Team of the Year. 

The following Friars were all nominated for the Los Angeles Soccer Player of the Year award with David Mitzner being selected a finalist and Uriel Sanchez winning the title.

Coach Spencer was also a finalist for Coach of the Year while the team was named among the top three teams in Los Angeles. 

Uriel Sanchez

Class: 2020

Position: Midfielder

College: Cal State Dominguez Hills

Noteworthy: A two-way threat, Sanchez sparked the Friars to their CIF-Southern Section Division 1 championship.

David Mitzner

School: Servite

Class: 2020

Position: Goalkeeper

College: Portland

Noteworthy: The 6-foot-3, 180-pound goalie tallied eight saves and blocked three penalty kicks against Cathedral (Los Angeles) as Servite won on 3-2 in a CIF-Southern Section Division 1 semifinal.

Jesus Melgoza

School: Servite

Class: 2021

Position: Forward

Noteworthy: Melgoza’s 13 goals led the Friars to the Division 1 title and earned him Trinity League offensive Player of the Year honors.
