First Servite alumnus principal will take the helm for 2021-2022 school year

Servite High School is pleased to announce that Mr. Stephen Walswick of the Class of 2002 has been appointed principal for the 2021-2022 school year.

A product of Catholic education from elementary to graduate school, Mr. Walswick strives to support and serve the members of his community through Catholic servant leadership. In doing this, he seeks to actualize their potential and promote an environment of mutual peace, respect, and understanding. His journey to Catholic school leadership can be traced back to his formative years at Servite.

As a member of Servite's class of 2002, Mr. Walswick cultivated a passion for learning, service to the community, and the development of his faith. "I am so grateful to the teachers I had at Servite. I look back and can still pinpoint how they specifically formed the person I am today," he recounts. While maintaining a rigorous course load, he played water polo and swam all four years. As the Gilde president, a service-oriented organization, Mr. Walswick worked with his peers to support the mission of Servite and serve the community as Christian witnesses. It was in attending and then leading Kairos retreats that he began to discern his vocation.

After completing a double major in English Literature and Philosophy at Loyola Marymount University, Mr. Walswick returned to Servite as a faculty member and assistant water polo coach. In his six years in the classroom, he taught multiple levels of English, including AP Literature, Algebra 1, Geometry, and Journalism. "My fondest memories at Servite involved connecting with my students in such a way that I knew that they were on the path towards being the best versions of themselves. It is such an inspiring honor to see the men, husbands, and fathers they have become," said Mr. Walswick. He helped advance the technology program as the Director of Educational Technology, working on modernizing the library, facilitating e-texts and online resources, and updating the student information and learning management systems. As the Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Technology, Mr. Walswick worked closely with teachers to develop their instructional practices and design new course electives for students.

During his tenure at Servite, Mr. Walswick earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from Chapman University and a Master of Arts in Catholic School Administration from Loyola Marymount University, where he was named the Graduate Student of the Year for the entire school of education and received the Most Outstanding Graduate Award for the Catholic School Administration Program. Empowered with the desire to maximize the gifts that God has given him, Mr. Walswick sought to expand his leadership capacity by serving as a school principal of Central Catholic High School in San Antonio, TX in the Fall of 2018.

Fr. Eugene Smith, OSM, a 1978 graduate of Servite and Prior Provincial of the Order of Friar Servants of Mary - USA, feels that Mr. Walswick’s variety of experience has prepared him well for his new leadership role. “Stephen’s long affiliation with, and affinity for, Servite High School puts him in the unique position of knowing the school’s culture, legacy and Servite identity from the inside out,” he said. “I know he will draw on all of this, along with his active faith, strong values and professional experience in Catholic school leadership, in his new role as Servite’s next principal – to the enrichment and benefit of the entire school community, building on the successes of those who have served before him and making the Servite experience all the more tangible and enduring in the lives of present and future Servite students and families.”

His journey as a Catholic school leader would not be possible without his family's support and influence. One of nine children, Mr. Walswick is grateful for his parents' witness of the Catholic faith and sacrifice to send him and his siblings to Catholic schools. He was introduced to his beautiful wife, Lacey, by a Servite teacher, and the two have been married for over 11 years. They have four spirited children: three girls and a boy who brings great joy and energy to their home each day. Mrs. Walswick teaches English courses online at a couple of universities and homeschools the Walswick children through a Catholic homeschool program. Outside of work and school, Mr. Walswick enjoys gardening, baking, watching the latest superhero movie, and listening to audiobooks. The Walswick family has been active at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Placentia and looks forward to returning to their home parish.

"I am excited and honored to return to Servite and serve as its next principal. As a product of its rich tradition of Forming Faith-Filled Leaders, I can't wait to take part in this legacy again and build upon the outstanding contributions the faculty, staff, alumni, students, and parents have made in advancing the school's mission. Servite has always held a special place in my life and faith journey. As I become reacquainted with each member of the Servite community, I pray that I might share the gifts God has given me and fully meet and serve each individual's needs. Then in a collaborative and community-oriented spirit, we will lead Servite into becoming the premier institution for forming young men to become the virtue-driven leaders of tomorrow."

- Mr. Stephen Walswick
