Junior Chad Deegan (Newport Beach, Calif.) has been selected as the Naval Academy Athletic Association (NAAA) Athlete of the Week presented by Northrop Grumman after leading the Navy men's golf team to a 356-367 victory over Towson last weekend.
Deegan birdied his first three holes en route to earning individual medalist honors and covering Saturday's 18-hole competition with a 2-under par 68. It was the first collegiate competition held at the newly-restored Naval Academy Golf Course.
While it was the first team competition for the Mids, Deegan participated in a pair of individually-scored events earlier in the month. The All-Patriot League performer tied for third at The Muppet, played Oct. 12 at the 6,900-yard, par-72 Trump National Golf Club in Washington, D.C. Deegan shot par (144) in the two-round tournament finishing even or ahead of some of the top players in the country, including Peter Barron (E, 144), the New Jersey Mid-Amateur Champion; Jamie Miller (E, 144), the New York Mid-Amateur Champion; Michael Muehr, former PGA Tour player and the host of the event; Charlie Winegardner (+6, 150), the two-time reigning Maryland Mid Amateur champion and Stephen Woodard (+9, 153), the Carolinas Mid-Amateur Champion.
Additionally, he tied for second at the Bidermann Intercollegiate held Oct. 19 at the Bidermann Golf Course in Wilmington, Del. He shot a 3-over par 75 and was just a stroke behind medalist Austin Barbin of Maryland and tops among the eight golfers Navy sent to compete.
