Technology Program


SHS Technology Ecosystem

The Servite High School Technology Ecosystem will provide students the freedom to learn and master academic content through personalized instruction. This program was implemented to help form students’ moral and ethical understanding and to guide application of technology and prepare students to meet the ever-changing technological demands relevant to higher education and the workplace.

As you may have heard, Servite is in the process of updating our Technology Ecosystem. We are currently developing a program that will provide faculty and students the opportunity to access curricular content anytime, anywhere and anyway.

Apple/iPad Pricing
 
Each family is responsible for procuring their own iPad for their son. These iPad's will be purchased, owned and maintained by you. You can read more about the iPad adoption HERE. Servite recommends purchasing the iPad at the nearest Apple Store (Brea) or online at  http://www.apple.com/ipad/.
Purchase Options:
Currently Apple offers two iPads. The iPad 2 16GB WiFi and the iPad with Retina Display. You do not need to purchase a new iPad if you already have one. Please be advised that the 16GB will provide enough memory to support Servite materials, but it may not be sufficient to also accommodate any personal applications or data.  We STRONGLY encourage you to NOT purchase an iPad with 4G. The majority of Servite materials are available offline and we have found that 4G iPads confound and at times undermine our goal in protecting your sons from harmful content.

AppleCare (learn more) $99.00  (includes two accidental damage repairs at $49.00 each) Since this iPad will be used every single day, we strongly recommend purchasing the extended warranty offered through AppleCare. 


**Additional accessories, like cases, styluses, and keyboards, are optional items that each family may decide upon.  SHS highly recommends that each family invest in a durable case that can also be used as a stand for viewing options (See review by PCMag HERE & CNET HERE to get you started on your decision).

SHS Technology Ecosystem:  

Class of 2017: Family owned iPad
Class of 2016 and 2015: School owned Lenovo Laptop + family owned iPad.
Class of 2014: School owned Tablet PC 

The Servite owned laptop for the 2013-14 school year is a Lenovo Laptop.  
 
How it works

At the beginning of each school year, sophomore through senior students are each assigned a school-owned tablet PC. Each laptop is imaged with the necessary software and security settings. Students will then coordinate with their teachers in obtaining access to their e-texts. 

E-Textbooks: The use of electronic books allows a student to carry all of his school books on his decivce(s) and gives him access to additional electronic resources including animated maps, videos, language labs, demonstrations, practice problems, quizzes and tests.  This also provides students with access to these books from anywhere.
 
School curriculum has been developed around and enhanced by the technology program, allowing students and teachers to better collaborate with each other. In the classroom, students submit homework, receive teachers' notes and have their classwork monitored and checked electronically by their teachers.

Back Up Plan
All student work should be saved to cloud based servers like Google Drive.  Each student will have 5GBs of storage within our Google EDU account. Students will then be able to access their saved documents via the "Cloud" (aka Google Drive), on any other internet connected device (iPad, another computer or smartphone).

Security Measures
All internet traffic and content is controlled through Servite's proprietary proxy server whether the student is on campus or at home while using the school owned laptop. The student owned iPads will have the same content filter while connected to our network, but will be under each family's restrictions while off campus.
 
Acceptable Use Policy
The purpose of the Acceptable Use Policy is to set forth standards governing Servite High School students’ use of the SHS Network Related Technologies. This policy promotes the ethical, legal, and educational use of the SHS Network.  Please review the policy in the Parent Student Handbook.
 

 The following technology costs are in effect for the 2013-2014 school year:
 

Freshmen

Freshman ($550): eTextbooks, Internet access, Servite technology infrastructure, limited support for apps, includes required apps

Hardware: Family owned iPad wifi minimum (not included in fee) 

Sophomore/Juniors

Sophomore and Junior ($800- Computer Fee $250 and E-Book $550) eTextbooks, Internet access, Servite technology infrastructure, limited support for apps, includes required apps, full tech support for school owned laptops.

Hardware: Family owned iPad2 16gb wifi minimum (not included in fee).
PLUS School owed Lenovo Laptop (no tablet features) (included in fee)

Seniors

Seniors ($1000- Computer Fee $450 and E-Book $550) eTextbooks, Internet access, Servite technology infrastructure, full tech support for school owned laptops. This fee also includes the use of a laptop computer and carrying case imaging and access to all online textbooks, interactive software, online resources, internet access, Microsoft Office and applicable curriculum (sophomores, juniors, and seniors only).
