Several Speech and Debate students competed in the Orange County Speech League (OCSL) Novice tournament at Century High School on Saturday, September 23. Matthew Martinez '20 took home the second place award in Impromptu Speech. The tournament consisted of students in their first or second year of competition, coming from 16 high schools throughout Orange County. In the Impromptu Speech event that Martinez took second place in, there were 24 competitors from seven different schools.
Martinez gave three different speeches during his event after being given various topics to prepare for prior on the spot. "The first subject matter was movie titles where I gave a speech about Wonder Woman and how women continue to play an impactful role in our world," said Martinez. From there, Martinez also gave a speech on political slogans and the role of change as well as a personal speech on something he wished he could have done in his past. "Matthew did a wonderful job preparing for the tournament," said Speech and Debate coach, Sarah Sherwood. "It is a true gift to be able to give a polished speech with little preparation and I couldn't be more proud of him and all of our Servite students who participated in the tournament."
The Servite High School Speech and Debate team competes year-round in a variety of local and travel tournaments. Students enter in different events, comparable to a track team, throughout a season spanning from September to April and ending with State and National Championship tournaments. Participating on the Speech and Debate team helps provide students with the opportunity to develop their public-speaking skills and confidence as well as their knowledge of current events and real life situations. "I enjoy being a part of Speech and Debate because it has helps me express my opinions about social issues," said Martinez. "I have been able to develop my own opinions while learning more about current events in the world today."
The next Speech and Debate event for Servite High School is the Claremont High School Bargain Belt Invitational on October 21, 2017.
