Coaching Staff

John Morris is entering his first season as the head coach at Servite and his eighth year overall at the school. Coach Morris was a three-sport letterman (football, basketball, and baseball) at Servite and graduated in 2001. While at Servite, Coach Morris was named captain of the varsity basketball team during his sophomore and junior years and was All-Serra League as a junior. As a senior, he was named All-Serra League, All-County, and MVP of the varsity football team and received a scholarship to Fresno State. Due to a knee injury suffered in the last football game of the year, Coach Morris was unable to compete on the basketball court as a senior. He received his bachelor’s degree in Human Communications from California State University, Fullerton in 2006.

After concluding his college football career in 2004, Coach Morris came back to Servite and began coaching football, basketball, and golf. During his time at Servite, Coach Morris has served as a varsity assistant basketball coach, head freshman basketball coach, strength/conditioning coach for basketball, varsity football assistant coach, freshman football assistant coach, video coordinator for football, head junior varsity golf coach and associate head coach for the three-time defending CIF-SS golf program.

Following the conclusion of the 2010-2011 basketball season, Coach Morris was promoted to associate head coach of the basketball program. Since 2007, Coach Morris has also taught Algebra 1 and has served as the Sophomore Formation Director for the past three years. This year he will again be serving as the Sophomore Formation Director and will also be working as an Admissions Counselor.

Brian Couso brings 25 years of coaching experience to the Varsity staff this year. He has been a coach for the NBA Summer League for the past 24 years and has been named Coach of the Year twice. In 2003-2004, Brian was the player development coach for Paul Westhead and the American Basketball Association World Champion Long Beach Jam. During his time with the Jam, Coach Couso made a name for himself while working with Dennis Rodman, Matt Barnes and various other professional players.

In 2004, Brian was named head coach of the Georgia Based Grizzlies of the ABA. Following his time with the Grizzlies, Coach Couso was named the head coach at Oxford Academy and led the Patriots to their best record in school history. Brian and his wife, Constance, have two children, Derrick and Delaney, and he "feels blessed to have the opportunity to serve and form the fine young men of Servite."

Buff Bogard comes to Servite with 31 years of professional, Division I, Community College and head high school coaching experience. He has coached internationally in the Philippines and Europe; at both Cypress College and Fullerton College, and a few local high schools. In addition to his coaching experience Buff played several years on the ATP tour and served as the head tennis professional at a major private club in Orange County. Buff’s wife of 23 years, Cynthia, was a collegiate tennis player.

Buff and Cynthia have three children; Brittany who attended Rosary and is a senior at Southern Methodist University majoring in Sports Psychology, competing in collegiate women’s golf and also serving in the sports medicine program as trainer for the football team, men’s basketball team and women’s soccer team; Lane who also attended Rosary and is a senior at Indiana University majoring in Neuro-Science is also lettering as a varsity athlete on the women’s rowing team; and Haydon who is a senior at Servite competing on the varsity baseball team for four years. Buff says he and his family feel lucky to be a part of the Servite family and he looks forward to being a positive influence in the basketball program.

Toby Vares is entering his fifth year as a Varsity Assistant Coach at Servite. A former Division II, all-conference basketball player at UC Riverside, Coach Vares has brought a wealth of basketball knowledge to the program. He played for Bob Burton, current head coach at Cal State Fullerton, at West Valley College where his team went 32-3 and earned state runner-up.

Coach Vares currently teaches sixth grade in the Garden Grove School District. Along with coaching and teaching, he is currently enrolled in a Master’s in Administration program with the future goal for becoming a principal. Coach Vares is happily married to Tien, his wife of six years. They reside in Costa Mesa with their son Brennan (3) and daughter Kailynn (13). Coach Vares is looking forward to a successful year in the Trinity League.

Parker Welch is a 2004 graduate of Servite, one of many Welch family members to have attended the school. Coach Welch graduated from University of California, Santa Cruz with a degree in Environmental Studies and has been coaching basketball at Servite on and off for the past five years.

Kellin Coates is entering his second year coaching in the Servite basketball program. Last year Coach Coates served as an assistant freshman coach and will be assuming the role of head coach of the sophomore team this season. Kellin attended El Modena High School where he was a three-year varsity letterman for the Vanguard basketball program. Coach Coates is very excited about the opportunity to lead and form the young men of the sophomore basketball team.

Zach Reeder is starting his fourth season with Servite basketball and last year his sophomore team won the Trinity League championship. Zach is also the associate head baseball coach at Beckman High School, winning the 2011 CIF Championship and three consecutive league championships. He teaches American Government & Politics at Servite and is the advisor to the “Pink Ribbon” Breast Cancer Awareness Club. Coach Reeder lives in Rancho Santa Margarita with his wife, Marie, and 10 month old daughter. He graduated from El Modena in 2001 and holds a B.A. in Political Science from California State University, Fullerton and a master’s degree in Education from National University.

Michael Pitre is in his third year at Servite High School. Michael currently coaches football, basketball and track for the Friars and teaches Academic Achievement, as well as working with football in support of their academics. Coach Pitre played football at UCLA and graduated with a B.A. in History and is currently working on a master’s degree in Special Education.

Aaron Mobley enters his first season at Servite High School and will be guiding the Freshman Gray team. Aaron graduated from Whittier High School in 2007 where he was a three-year varsity starter for the Cardinals. After high school, Coach Mobley played guard at Long Beach State for three years and is close to completing his bachelor’s degree in Political Science.

Zach LaMonda graduated from Servite in 1997 where he played football, basketball, baseball, and track. He earned a football scholarship to San Diego State University and graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration. After college he played Arena Football for three seasons. LaMonda started coaching at St. Augustine High School in San Diego and was a football coach at Servite during the 2009 and 2010 seasons when the team earned two PAC 5 CIF Championships. He brings his excitement and passion for sports and working with young men to the Servite basketball program. He currently works as an Algebra teacher at Servite and is engaged to be married to Karynn Rice on December 30, 2011.

Chaz Kekipi was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii and attended the prestigious Punahou School. He played football and track in high school and played another year of football in college while attending Chapman University. He graduated from Chapman in 2008 with a B.S. in Athletic Training. He is in his fourth year as head athletic trainer at Servite High School and when asked why he chose this job he simply responds; "Why wouldn't I want to watch sports all day?" Fun loving and positive, Chaz intends to provide collegiate level care to all Servite athletes.

Cody Kekipi was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. He attended Punahou School and played for the first football state qualifying team in school history. He was a two time All-NEC center for the St. Francis (PA) Red Flash. He studied human movement and graduated with a B.S. in Exercise Physiology. Although most of his background is in football, Cody is a fan of all sports and enjoys training athletes at all levels.
