           23rd Annual CSUF Special Games Kathleen E. EVENT TIME: 8:30 AM - 2:00 PM OPENING CEREMONIES: 9:30 AM - START TIME EVENT LOCATION: CAL STATE UNIVERSITY - FULLERTON Soccer Practice Field (by the Gym) MASTER OF CEREMONIES: ED ARNOLD, Host, Real Orange-KOCE TV EVENT DESCRIPTION: The California State University, Fullerton - Kathleen E. Faley Memorial - Special Games is the largest event of its kind held in the county. Thousands of developmentally disabled students from local area schools in Orange County participate in the day of non-competitive Special Games each year. The Special Games hosts over 2,800 special athletes and 2,500 volunteers. Our goal is to create a special day for some very special athletes. The day is comprised of the opening ceremonies, five to seven athletic events, including the football and basketball toss, t-ball, soccer goal kicks and 50-yard dash. The day includes a grand welcoming of 3000 volunteers of each arriving special athlete who are cheered at the entrance of the games, theme park characters who welcome all of the arriving athletes, barbeque lunch, music-man melodies, magical clowns, balloons, a live band, local fire and police squad cars and trucks and a special first place ribbon and certificate of attendance for each athlete to complete the day. The day concludes with over 5,000 participants, staff and volunteers sharing the entire day together creating new memories and a lot of smiles. VOLUNTEERS: We need your help to coordinate the events and interact with the special athletes throughout the day. Struggling to complete a difficult class project, Dan Faley, Lisa Whaley, and Tom Bohen decided to create an on campus event for developmentally-disabled and special-needs students from local schools: a day of sports, food, ribbons, Disneyland characters, and lots of special attention. Dan, Lisa, and Tom wanted their event to be different from other Special Games events -- they wanted one volunteer for each participating student. Family, friends, CSUF football and basketball players, and other fellow students showed up that April morning in 1986, and the CAL-STATE FULLERTON Special Games were born. The key to this event has always been -- and will always be -- the volunteers. One of the key volunteers that first year was Kathleen E. Faley, Dan's sister. Unfortunately, Kathleen was killed the following year in an automobile accident. The Games were renamed “The CAL-STATE FULLERTON Special Games-Kathleen E. Faley Memorial” in her honor. It has been said that "without a seed a tree cannot grow," and that is certainly the case with the CAL-STATE FULLERTON Special Games. This endeavor is not only a family affair -- the entire Faley family turns out to help -- but a community event as well. The early support of Mr. Maurice Monnig gave us the seed to plant the tree, and it has been growing ever since, creating thousands of smiles over 18 years for all who participate, young and old. http://www.csufspecialgames.or...
