One of the most important services a school provides to its students is academic counseling. Research shows that the quality of a school's academic counseling program can affect a student's overall satisfaction with his high school experience. At Servite High School, the Academic Counseling Department has been recognized as outstanding and exemplary in its delivery of advising services. We are one of the few schools to provide full-time professional academic counselors to all students, from their first year at Servite through graduation.

At Servite High School, we assign every student an academic counselor, who is available to help sort out the many choices and decisions that students need to make in high school. The Academic Counseling Department consists of three professional academic counselors, each specializing in a grade level.

Mr. Coates concentrates on the orientation and direction of all students at the freshmen level. Adjustment to the high school curriculum, study skills for success in a college preparatory environment, and planning for the entire for years fall under his responsibilities.

Mrs. Moore focuses on the sophomores for the entire year. Emphasis is placed on the PSAT test and interest/career inventories to assist students in making long-range plans for college. Mrs. Moore also coordinates honors and awards.

Ms. Recknor supports the junior class as they begin to explore post-secondary opportunities and prepare for the SAT, ACT and AP tests.

Mr. Clapp assumes duties related to the selection of colleges and all activities related to the college application process including financial aid information, college requirements and college essays.

In synergy with Dr. McCann, Ms. Blashaw assists students who have documented learning needs and helps coordinate the necessary support services. Ms. Blashaw also mentors the Peer Assistance Leadership (PAL) and is the head of the Academic Achievement Program that provides assistance for students whose academic record indicates they need more organized support.

While each counselor has specific duties related to the students' future, their immediate responsibilities revolve around the present. The academic progress and completion of graduation requirements are paramount to everyone in the Academic Counseling Department.

In conjunction with the Assistant Principal of Academic Affairs, academic counselors also advise students with regard to course selection each year bearing in mind the graduation requirements as well as the future college plans of the students.

We encourage all students to achieve at the highest level possible and to prepare in the most thorough way for entrance into and success at the college of their choice.

The Academic Counseling Department is available to students every day of the school year from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.  We encourage all students and parents to contact the Academic Counseling Department with any questions or concerns. We are here to help!
