Classical Guitar

Servite High School is proud to be home to a nationally renowned classical guitar program. Students from the program, since its inception in 2000, have gone on to win and place in local and national solo and ensemble competitions as well as earn numerous scholarship awards for college guitar study.

Students with no previous experience may take beginning classical guitar to obtain the skills necessary to play the guitar in any style.  From there they will be prepared to participate in the second through fourth year advanced guitar classes and play in the Servite Guitar Ensembles.

The SCGP provides a truly college-prep guitar experience training students in the skills necessary to take guitar study to the post secondary level.  Whether students desire to study guitar formally in college or not, the Servite guitar experience will be a well rounded quality college-prep guitar experience.

Servite guitarists participate in numerous performances throughout the year. There are two concerts, Winter and Spring, on the Servite campus, the annual Fullerton Museum Center concert, participation in the Cal – State Fullerton Guitar Ensemble Festival (Servite was the first high school group invited to participate in this college festival in its 20+ year history), providing music for the Servite Fashion Show, Open House, Mother – Son Brunch, and many others including serving in the role of music ministry for campus Masses.

The Servite High School Classical Guitar Ensemble may be available for your personal or professional event.  Please contact the director, Mr. Gregg Goodhart, for more information at (714) 774-7575, extension 1154.

SERVITE CLASSICAL GUITAR PROGRAM MAKING AN IMPACT!
"Guitar students at Servite High School receive comprehensive musical training, and possess wonderful fundamental skills that all college programs seek in incoming students. I have been highly impressed with the fundamental technique, reading skills, ensemble experience and interpretive maturity I've seen in Servite students, as well as their involvement in the larger guitar community."

Dr. Martha Masters (Loyola Marymount University – Los Angeles)

“I am so impressed by the young guitarists at Servite High School and the entire music program. Gregg Goodhart is doing a wonderful job creating the musicians of tomorrow.”

Dr. Scott Morris, Coordinator, Guitar Studies (California State University – Dominguez Hills)

"It is a great pleasure to work with students from the Servite High School guitar program. Their studies there under Mr. Gregg Goodhart have given them great motivation, a serious attitude toward building their skills and a very good foundation on which to base college-level work. The emphasis on ensemble playing is especially helpful in promoting basic musicianship. The Servite program is a leader in the field and a model that we hope to see implemented in many other high schools."

David Grimes, Director of Guitar Studies (California State University, Fullerton)

“Servite High School has developed a comprehensive guitar program at that fully prepares the potential guitar student for college. The students are immersed in technique, pedagogy, theory, history, and guitar performance. These students will have the foundational skills to excel in a college guitar program and have a career in music. As a college instructor, I am constantly looking for potential students that have learned basic technique and repertoire. Servite High School’s guitar program is one of the best high school programs I have worked with and am looking forward to their continued progress and development.”

Michael Nigro, Professor Guitar  (Vanguard University of Southern California)

GREGG GOODHART founded the Servite music program in the 2000/01 school year as the only music instructor on campus. Since then, a few beginning guitar and band classes have grown into a vibrant and deep college prep music program that includes band and choir as well as classical guitar. He now heads a department of three music teachers and steers the music program with a vision toward a unique educational environment.

As a guitar teacher Mr. Goodhart is sought out nationally.  He founded and currently serves as a member of the Pre-College Education Committee for the Guitar Foundation of America.  His articles on pre-college guitar education have appeared in Soundboard the journal of the GFA and American String Teacher the journal of The American String Teachers Association. He adjudicates national guitar competitions for solo and ensemble performers.

Mr. Goodhart is a dynamic performer particularly interested in modern music. His recitals offer a variety of selections from the renaissance to recently composed works.  He has been particularly noted for his interpretive approach to music from all eras.

Mr. Goodhart holds a masters degree in performance from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale where he studied with Joseph Breznikar.
