Smarter Not Harder for Success
Dear Parents:

My name is Daniel R. Coates, the Freshman Academic Counselor at Servite High School.  The counseling and administrative staff would like to invite your son to become a part of our program “Smarter Not Harder for Success at Servite.”  This is a collaborative effort with the primary goal of reducing the number of students on academic probation and providing academic assistance to those in need.  Numerous teachers and staff from Servite are assisting, including Mrs. Levalle from the Theology department, Ms. Andrea Valenzuela, Academic Counseling Assistant Secretary, and Ms. Hillary Recknor of the Servite Counseling staff. We also have guest speakers once a month that include Ms. Sue Casey P.P.S., an Education Specialist from The Orange Unified School District.  She will speak on topics like developing a plan for success, how to conquer your homework before it conquers you, and unique and different styles of learning.  This program consists of workshops, tutoring assistance and homework completion assistance.  Participants will be further exposed to organization skills and planning as they relate to homework and test preparation in workshops.

This is a challenging year for some students and in all likelihood your son’s academic workload has increased. However, sometimes there is a bit more to adjusting to the Servite High School academic environment.  This program will provide additional support for those students.

I am available to meet with parents and students in the Academic Counseling office before and after school. I will be collaborating with co-workers and outside resources to better meet the needs of your son.  I have had the pleasure of meeting some of you during conferences and at athletic events, but if we have not met, please feel free to call or e-mail me for an appointment.  It is my goal to assist your son in every way possible to be a competent, successful and well rounded student.

I consider it a privilege and an honor to be an academic counselor as well as a football and wrestling coach at Servite High School. To be in a position of guidance through the formation of the future Servite leaders, can only be described as a blessing.  I look forward to help your son meet his academic goals for the remainder of the year and beyond.

Sincerely,

Daniel R. Coates, III
